Day 1: Arrival in Tbilisi

Tour of Tbilisi - Mtskheta

 

Mtskheta- Due to its historical significance and several cultural monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. As the birthplace and one of the most vibrant centers of Christianity in Georgia, Mtskheta was declared as the "Holy City" by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014.

Svetitskhoveli- Cathedral - First church was built in 4th century. Afterwards during the centuries it became the largest and the most impressive church of Georgia. Christ's mantle is buried here, which was brought here from Jerusalem. The church is in the UNESCO world heritage sites.

Holy Cross Monastery – Jvari Monastery - is a Georgian Orthodox monastery of the 6th century. There are picturesque views of Tbilisi and Mtskheta from monastery territory. Nowadays Jvari monastery is an active church and monks live there.

Tbilisi - is the ancient capital of Georgia, where about 1 500 000 inhabitants live. It was founded in 5th century AD by the Georgian King Vakhtang Gorgasali. Nowadays Tbilisi is the main industrial, cultural and social center of Georgia.

Old Tbilisi and Sulfur Baths - Foundation of Tbilisi is related to Tbilisi sulphure baths. According to the legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali discovered these sulphure baths while hunting. So the name Tbilisi derives from Georgian word "Tbili", meaning warm. 

Narikhala fortress - It's built in 4th century. It was occupied by Iranian, North Caucasian and Byzantine, Arab conquerors in various periods of time. Nowadays Church of St. Nikoloz built in 13th century is now located within the castle.
Metekhi Church - It was first built in 5th century when Vakhtang Gorgasali was the king of Kartli. There are breathtaking views of Old Tbilisi from the church. 
Trinity Church - is the biggest cathedral not only in Georgia, but also in whole Caucasus region. The height of cathedral is 100 meters. There are 12 churches within the interior of the church. Great ecclesiastical relics are kept there. Among them there is the unique manuscript of the Gospel written during 1984-2004.

Day 2: Tbilisi - Tsalka - Tskhratskharo Pass - Bakuriani

Drive to Tsalka.

Passing through the beautiful landscapes and mountainous passes.

 

Arrival in Bakuriani – is a skiing resort in the Borjomi district of Georgia. It is located on the northern slope of the Trialeti Range, at an elevation of 1,700 meters (5,576 feet) above sea level. The region around Bakuriani is covered by coniferous forests (mainly made up of spruce). The resort lies 30 km (19 mi) from Borjomi and is located within the so-called Bakuriani Depression/caldera. The resort is connected with Borjomi by an electrified narrow-gauge railway. The present-day area of the town was built up by the lava flows from the Mukheri volcano. The highest mountain of the resort used for skiing is called Mount Kohta at around 2,200 meters (7,216 feet) above sea level.

Day 3: Bakuriani - Borjomi - Vardzia - Akhaltsikhe - Rabati castle

Drive to Borjomi, famous with its nature and natural mineral water springs.

Visit to Timotesubani monastery which is a medieval Georgian Orthodox Christian monastic complex located at the eponymous village in the Borjomi Gorge.

Visit to Vardzia (12th c.) – a rock-hewn complex on the left bank of the river Mtkvari. Initially planned as a town-fortress, the complex became a well fortified monastery, which had a significant role in political, cultural, educational and spiritual life of the country. In the middle of the complex there is a Church of Assumption, richly decorated with mural paintings.

Then drive to center of Samckhe region Akhalcikhe and visit Rabati castle - with its multicultural architecture, is well worthwhile. This district is on a hill on the north side of the Potskhovi, just west of the bridge. Rare examples of darbazi (traditional Georgian houses) cluster around the castle, which was built in the 12th century and houses a mosque from 1752 and the ruins of a medrese (Islamic school). The Rabati also has a synagogue, an Armenian church and a Catholic church, shops, restaurant, main tower, small pools, fountains and fantastic views for taking photos.

Day 4: Akhaltsikhe - Zekari pass - Kutaisi

Akhaltsikhe is a small city in Georgia’s southwestern region of Samtskhe0Javakheti. It is situated on the both banks of a small river Potskhovi, which separates the city to the old city in the north and new in the south. The name of the city translates from Georgian as “new fortress”.

From resort Abastumani a highway runs in the direction of Zekari or Mzekari (the door of the sun) Pass, where a tourists’ shelter is located, and goes as far as Imereti, the Bagdati district, which is also part of the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. One road leading to a famous resort of Sairme and the other to a beautiful gorge of the river Kershavetistskhali, where one can see an impressive water-fall and have a rest in a well-know rest-house Zekari famous for its hot mineral water springs.

Drive to Kutaisi, second largest city of Georgia in its west part. Founded about 40 centuries ago, former capital of the west Georgian Kingdom Colchis, to which is related the myth of Golden Fleece and Argonauts.

Day 5: Kutaisi - Zugdidi - Mestia

Kutaisi – Visit two UNESCO Heritage sites of Bagrati Temple (11th c.) and Gelati Monastery (12th c.).  
Sataplia Grotto, where the step-prints of dinosaurs were found.

 

Drive to Samegrelo, enjoy the Abashistskhali river waterfall. Visit to Zugdidi, Dadiani palace. Representatives of Dadiani dynasty were acquinted with world history, culture latest technical achievements. They were tightly involved in the social events. The palace keeps 41 000 museum objects, most of them are unique and invaluable examples of Georgian and foreign art.

Drive to the direction of Svaneti. On the road visit to Enguri dam, with the height of 271 meters (the highest dan if this type in the world). The dam makes a water-storage reservoir in the picturesque gorges of Samegrelo and Svaneti mountains. It’s time to get ready for the most exciting part of the trip – Journey to Svanety, region of the highest mountains and glaciers and the most abiding ancient traditions. In Svaneti you visit Latali and Lenjeri single-nave basilicas of the 8th-9th-14th c.c., built by stones without ornamentation, with the interior richly decorated with murals.

Day 6: Mestia - Ushguli

Historically and ethnographically, Mestia has always been regarded a chief community of Zemo or Upper Svaneti province. It was formerly known as Seti. Despite its small size, the town was an important centre of Georgian culture for centuries and contains a number of medieval monuments. Churches and forts, includied in a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 1968 it was granted a status of a borough (Georgian: Daba) 
Laghami Saint George’s church (7th – 12th c.c) and Svan dwelling complex. Visit to the church of St. George in Nakipari (1130 AD) and Ethnographic museum in Ushguli. Ushguli is considered to be the highest populated area in Europe (2200m above sea level) 
Also the villages of Ushguli contain buildings that are part of the UNESCO Heritage site of Upper Svaneti.

Day 7: Ushguli - Lentekhi - Tsageri - Kutaisi

Lentekhi is a small town and it ethnographically belongs to a historic Georgian province of Lower, or Kvemo Svaneti.

Tsageri is located at 475 m above sea level, on the right bank of the Tskhenis-Tsqali, an affluent of the Rioni river.  the town had a population of approximately 1,900.

Day 8: Kutaisi - Gori - Stalin Museum - Uplistsikhe - transfer at Tbilisi airport

Drive to Gori. The city was founded by one of the greatest king of Georgia – David the Builder (1089-1125). Visit the Joseph Stalin Museum in Gori, Georgia is dedicated to the life of the town’s most famous son, Joseph Stalin, who became the leader of the Soviet Union. 
We’ll visit Uplistsikhe. ”The Lord’s Fortress” is an ancien rock-hewn town in eastern Georgia, built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River. It contains various structures dating from the 2nd ML BC to the Late Middle Ages, and is notable for the unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures.
