Day 1: Arrival in Tbilisi

Tour of Mtskheta – Tbilisi

 

Mtskheta- Due to its historical significance and several cultural monuments, the "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta" became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. As the birthplace and one of the most vibrant centers of Christianity in Georgia, Mtskheta was declared as the "Holy City" by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014.

Svetitskhoveli- Cathedral - First church was built in 4th century. Afterwards during the centuries it became the largest and the most impressive church of Georgia. Christ's mantle is buried here, which was brought here from Jerusalem. The church is in the UNESCO world heritage sites.

Holy Cross Monastery – Jvari Monastery - is a Georgian Orthodox monastery of the 6th century. There are picturesque views of Tbilisi and Mtskheta from monastery territory. Nowadays Jvari monastery is an active church and monks live there.

 

Tbilisi - is an ancient capital of Georgia, sunny and beautiful. It was founded in 5th century AD by the Georgian King Vakhtang Gorgasali. Nowadays Tbilisi is the main industrial, cultural and social center of Georgia. During its existence it was invaded and restored more then 40 times. Image of old Tbilisi is like no other city in the world. Tbilisi possess a special atmosphere. Tourists walk in Tbilisi with groups or individually. In the street you can see exhibitions of paintings as well as observe souvenirs made by handymen. There always teaming life: bars, pubs, nightclubs, live music, wine bars, billiard halls, casinos and music till the morning.

Old Tbilisi and Sulfur Baths - Foundation of Tbilisi is related to Tbilisi sulphure baths. According to a legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali discovered these sulphure baths while hunting. So the name Tbilisi derives from Georgian word "Tbili", meaning warm.

Narikhala fortress - Is built in the 4th century. It was occupied by Iranians, North Caucasian, Byzantine and  Arab conquerors in various periods of time. Nowadays Church of St. Nikoloz built in 13th century, is located within the castle.

Metekhi Church - It was built in 5th century when Vakhtang Gorgasali was the king of Kartli. You can see breathtaking wiev from Old Tbilisi.

Trinity Church -is the biggest cathedral not only in Georgia, but also in a whole Caucasus region. The height of cathedral is 100 meters. There are located 12 other churches inside the church. Great ecclesiastical relics are kept there. Among them is a unique manuscript of the Gospel written during 1984-2004.

Day 2: Tbilisi - Bodbe Monastery - Signagi - Wine tour in Gurdjaani - Shumi Wine Factory and Museum - Tbilisi

Drive to the eastern part of Georgia - Kakheti.

 

«Bodbe» –  On June 1, Orthodox Church of Georgia marks the day of St. Nino’s entrance from Cappadocia. Her tomb is still shown at the Bodbe Monastery in Kakheti region. St. Nino has become one of the most venerated saints of the Georgian Orthodox Church and her attribute, a Grapevine cross, is a symbol of Georgian Christianity. The monastery now functions as a nunnery and is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia, due to its association with St. Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist of Georgians, whose relics are shrined there.​

«Signagi» - is a small town of Kakheti. In 2007 began reconstruction of the city which turned into a city called “image of Georgian tourism”. Now it is one of the visited places in Georgia. It was built in the second half of the XVIII century, During the reigning period of King Irakli II. Buildings are constructed in a southern Italian classicism mixed with Georgian elements. This castle is famous in Georgia as one of the largest castles in Georgia. The walls of the Signagi fortress is surrounded by an old part of the town and goes far beyond the city boundaries with a magnificent view of the Alazany Valley.

“Wine company Shumi” - is one of the leaders among producers of high quality Georgian wines. In ancient Georgia, the word “Shumi” meant genuine, undiluted wine. It has long  since been used as a defining term for the best wine. The logo of the company is a griffin (“Phaskunji” in Georgian mythology), which according to ancient legend brought the very first bunch of grapes to the people. It was from these grapes that people started growing vines on earth.

Day 3: Tbilisi - Ananuri - Khazbegi - Tbilisi

Ananuri- Is a castle complex of 17th century on the Aragvi. It includes a small and a large church with a dome and chaple. The complex is located next to the Jinvali reservoir (built in 1971),wich serves as one of the largest hydro-electric power station.

Khazbegi- Kazbegi is a village in the northern Georgia, and most popular among hikers. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains. There is a unique view from Kazbegi (5047m)and from Kazbegi Gergeti’s Trinity erected  on mountain, which is located opposite to Kazbegi.

Kazbegi is the gateway to the world of mountains and is associated with the grandeur of mountain landscapes. The administrative center is located at the foot of the

mountain village of Kazbegi- Stepantsminda.

Trinity Church of Gergeti - of 14th century - It is built on the slope of Mt. Mkinvartsveri (top of glacier), on the left bank of the river Tergi. It is the monument built on the highest spot in Europe. Gergeti is a domed church with a bell-tower.

Day 4: Tbilisi - Uplistsikhe - Museum of Josep Stalin - National Park of Borjomi - Borjomi

Uplistsikhe - "King of the castles" – is an ancient rock-hewn town in eastern Georgia, some 10 kilometers east of the town of Gori, Shida Kartli. Built on a high rocky left bank of the Mtkvari River, it contains various structures dating from the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, and is notable for the unique combination of various styles of rock-cut cultures from Anatolia and Iran, as well as the co-existence of pagan and Christian architectureUplistsikhe is identified by archaeologists as one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. Strategically located in the heartland of ancient kingdom of Kartli (or Iberia as it was known to the Classical authors), it emerged as a major political and religious center of the country.

Gori - Joseph Stalin Museum – The main corpus of the complex is a large palazzo in Stalinist Gothic style, built in 1951 ostensibly as a local history museum, but clearly intended to become a memorial to Stalin, who died in 1953.    The exhibition is chronologically divided into several rooms, which keeps a lot of exhibits that are actually or allegedly owned by Stalin, including furniture, personal items and gifts. There are also exhibits on display in the form of documents, photographs, drawings and newspaper articles.

Borjomi National Park- The history of the park dates back to Medieval times when it was used primarily by the local aristocracy for hunting. During the entry of Georgia into the Russian Empire Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich  had  a great influence on the fate of the edge, who was brother of Alexander II, the former governor-general of the Caucasus. He found a local beauty of the park and decided to build an impressive building as his summer residence. Later, he has reserved a large territory and banned hunting without an authorization.

Day 5: Borjomi- Gelati Monastery - Bagrati Cathedral - Cave of Prometheus - Tbilisi

Kutaisi-  Kutaisi is the second largest city and a former capital of the western Georgian Kingdom Colchis It is associated with the legend of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece.  

Gelati Monastery – is a symbol of the Golden Age of Georgia. This is an outstanding monument of Georgian architecture, the center of spiritual and scientific life of the Middle Ages. Gelati was an important center of culture, science and education. Under its arches were crowned David the Builder and Queen Tamara. There is located the tomb of the king David the builder.

Bagrati Cathedral – is the monument  that stands on the hill on the right bank of the river Rioni. The top of the hill is the best observation deck in Kutaisi. The temple was built in 1003 and it can be seen from many places in the city. He is regarded as one of the most remarkable monuments of medieval Georgian architecture.

Cave of Prometheus - was discovered in 1984. According to a legend, Prometheus was chained to the mountains around the area. Now illuminated stalactites and stalagmites attract hundreds of tourists. Tour of the grotto  are accompanied by sound and light effects, which creates an atmosphere  of science factionary  films.
